Podiatry
The podiatric profession is a medical specialty that is concerned with the
diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human foot disorders and sport
injuries through medical and surgical means. The podiatrist may diagnose and
treat foot problems, help care for the unique problems of the diabetic foot,
perform surgery, prescribe and administer drugs, and mold, fit and dispense
foot orthotics (orthopedic devices that fit around the foot or insert into
the shoe to relieve pressure, chronic foot pain or help stabilize the bony
structure or musculature of the foot.). Most podiatry services, other than
routine foot care, are covered by insurance and Medicare and Medicaid.
