M.R.I. Frequently
Asked Questions
What is an MRI?
MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a highly detailed scan of a particular
part of your body. The Scan is performed in a sequence of “slices” to view
different parts of the body in two dimensions. It is a painless procedure
requiring no preparation other then the usual metal precautions. Please let
us know if you have any metal rods, implants, a knee or hip replacement, a
pacemaker or defibrillator.
How is an MRI different than a plain film X-ray?
MRI images are produced in tree different planes, utilizing a strong
magnetic field and radio frequency. An x-ray uses radiation to expose a
skeletal image on the film. There are no known long term side effects of
MRI.
About the actual scan:
You will be lying down on a table that is moved into the magnet. You will
hear a ticking or knocking during the actual scanning period. At our
facility, to make your exam more comfortable, we use earphones with music or
earplugs to lessen the noise, for the duration of the scan.
What is expected of me?
The MRI scan last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending upon the
area being scanned and the type of scan you doctor has requested. You will
be asked to change into a gown and remove anything containing metal, either
in clothing, jewelry, piercing, etc. Your most important role is to remain
still during the scan time and respond to the technician’s requests.
Because our magnet is an ultra-short bore (meaning very narrow as compared
to older magnets), the likelihood of claustrophobia is very small. Onsite
sedation to keep you relaxed, is available from our physicians, if you
choose.
NOTE: If you require sedation, please plan to have a driver accompany you
for your exam.
How soon will I know results?
The MRI images are immediately sent via a secure internet telerad system to
Iowa Radiology PC in Des Moines. Your exam will be interpreted by a
radiologist who specializes in MRI studies and the resulting report will be
sent or faxed to your doctor.
