Mammography
We have full mammography capabilities. Our Machine is a state of the art
dedicated mammography x-ray unit, that is both FDA and State of Iowa
inspected. We are an accredited mammography site. Our experienced staff
includes three board certified mammographers.
A mammogram is a low dose x-ray of the breast. It can detect many breast
changes that are too small or too deep to feel. Today’s mammograms are
considered safe, quick and relatively painless.
Risk factors:
• family history of breast cancer, either yourself or blood relatives.
• Being over the age of 50.
• Being on hormone replacement therapy.
• Never being pregnant or first pregnancy occurring after the age of 30.
• Obesity and certain dietary habits.
Consider the facts:
• More than 80% of breast lumps are proven benign, but all lumps should be
examined by a doctor.
• More than 70% of breast cancers occur in women with no identifiable risk
factors.
• A 5 Year survival rate after treatment for early stage breast cancer is
90-95%.
American Cancer Society Guidelines:
20 years of age: breast self-examination monthly.
20-40 years of age: A physician breast examination every three years and an
initial mammogram between the ages of 35-40.
40-50 years of age: Periodic mammography every year or two as determined by
your personal history and your doctor’s recommendation. Also, an annual
physician breast examination.
Over 50 years of age: Annual mammography and an annual physician
examination.
