…An Alternative for Acne Treatment

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions seen in medical offices, affecting over 80% of the population at some point in their lives. In the U.S. alone, over one billion dollars were spent last year on anti-acne medication and treatment.
Acne is caused by a plugging and bacterial infection of the sebaceous glands which provide the normal oils (sebum) to moisturize the skin and hair. This causes an inflammatory response leading to pimples, whiteheads and cysts. Traditional treatments for acne have included a combination of cleansers and prescription topical and oral medications. Unfortunately these treatments may take months to work, and carry the risk of mild to severe to permanent side effects.
Webster City Medical Clinic is proud to announce a new option in the treatment of acne. On April 5th, the FDA approved the Medilux Pulsed Light Therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne. This type of acne produces swollen, red pimples. The Medilux Light System targets a specific protein found in the bacteria, thus destroying the bacteria, altering the function of the gland, thereby decreasing the oiliness of the skin. This significantly reduces the development of new pimples. The Medilux System is not recommended for blackheads and whiteheads.
The recommended treatment protocol for this type of acne is one weekly treatment for 5 weeks. Each treatment takes approximately 15 minutes. There are certain limitations to consider before treatment. As with any Medilux treatment, strict sun or tanning avoidance must be followed before, during, and for several weeks after the treatment protocol. The prescription drug, Accutane cannot have been used during the 6 months prior to the treatment. Other individual precautions may be discussed during an initial consultation.
